Last year, our performance in the academic, aesthetic and physical scopes has maintained a good standard. Yip Sai Ho from 7M got 4 distinctions and a credit in AL Exam., Chan On Yee from 5B gained 8 distinctions in HKCE Exam. Over the last five years, the average credit percentages obtained in the Certificate Examination and Advanced Level Examination were 44% and 38% respectively, while the average university admission rate was 84%. In the HK Schools Speech Festival, we got a total of 23 prizes in the English events and 14 prizes in the Chinese events. The Chinese debating teams harvested their efforts by winning 5 prizes in several competitive inter-school contests. In music, we also obtained pleasing results of 24 prizes from the HK Schools Music Festival. In addition, the members of recorder bands have memorable and exciting experience in the two joint performances, one with students from Foshan and one with Taiwan students. In the inter-school sports competitions, we got the pleasing result of overall seventh place among 201 H.K. & Kowloon co-educational schools. Our students have also maintained a high standard of performance in other aspects. To name but a few, Suen Chit Yuen from 4B and Lam Tuen Yung from 6B, entered the finalist of the Outstanding Student Awards in two important territory-wide competitions. We have students awarded Outstanding Youth Member of the Year and won the Championship in the Youth First Aid Competitions of the Hong Kong Red Cross in two consecutive years. Such achievements denoted more and more students excel their potentials not only in their studies but also in their leadership and community services. As students of Wa Ying are acclaimed for their good behavior, eagerness in learning, enthusiasm in services and active participation in their campus life, many primary students and their parents put Wa Ying College on the top priority when they make their choices of secondary schools. Despite the consistent drop of the student population in Hong Kong, we are grateful that we can receive a pleasing number of applications for F.1 places and maintain a high standard of student intake. To further stretch the potential of our students, we are not satisfied with just providing our students with high level of literacy and numeracy skills as life-long learners. We have devoted much effort in creating learning opportunities conducive to higher social intelligence and ethical standard. We aim to nurture our students to be the future leaders who would not just target at personal achievement but also with good virtues and global vision. Service education is the way we use to cultivate their sense to be service leaders. Shortly after the beginning of this school term, the economic crisis in the US delivered a shock everywhere around the world. The impact is also felt in Hong Kong. It is starting to hit factories, exporters, enterprises and retailers. I am not sure how many of our students’ families suffered. As in the past, we have reserved funds to assist students who need financial aid to support their daily needs. I wish the teaching of our Lord could help our students and alumni persevere and cope with the adversity. Jesus Christ said, “So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’…. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Let us pray that our graduates can rely on God, walk with him and follow his guidance through the hard time and the prosperous time. In the years ahead, we will continue to uphold the school mission and carry on the valuable traditions and cultures built by our forerunners. Our teachers have devoted their efforts in preparing the launching of the new senior secondary curriculum in 2009 for a few years. School-based curriculum of Liberal Studies and new pedagogies of many subjects have been introduced. Curricula of career-related experiences, life education and service education that would fit our students’ needs have been revised and dovetailed with the core and elective subjects. Finally, may I express my heartfelt thanks to all my staff, teaching, clerical and janitorial for their devotion towards the students and their work. In particular, I want to extend my profound appreciation to the Vice Principals and the curriculum leaders who have paid great efforts to plan and prepare for the new curriculum. Last but not least, I would like to express my gratitude to the H.K. Methodist Church, the Alumni Association, and parents for their unfailing support to make Wa Ying an improving school. |
